KAN is thrilled to have the insanely talented Suzy Brown take an extended session on the fundamentals of hand dyeing protein (animal) fibres.

This class covers the theory of the dye process – how dyes work and how to achieve the colours you want. This is also a hands on class and you will get to dye some of your very own yarns or fibre in rich solid colours, and learn several techniques for a variety of special effects.

All dyestuffs and yarn materials are supplied for the class.

Numbers are limited – if we get enough wait listed participants – these will be offered first spaces at an encore session on Thursday 26th.

In this class you will take a journey through Scandinavian knitting traditions. You will look at various types of patterns associated with the different Scandinavian countries. What did chickens have to do with knitting in Denmark in the 70’s? What is a Norwegian purl? And what’s the difference between a ‘lice’ and a ‘flea’ in a traditional Norwegian Lusekofta?

Helene has updated the class with new material and inspiration for 2021!

You will also be introduced to some popular contemporary knitting designers from Scandinavia.

Weaving has seen a huge renaissance in recent years with simple, stunning textural woven art being exceptionally popular.

We will cover the basic fundamentals of weaving and you will take away a small loom to try out your techniques at home.

This class was introduced during the KAN Cruise in 2019 and was a huge hit and SO much fun for all those who took it – it saw knitted bunnies take over the ship!

Using a pattern by Susan B. Anderson, Nanette uses this charming wee bunny to teach a variety of techniques, such as small circumference knitting on double pointed needles through to after thought insertion and shaping this wee bunny together.

Scheduled for day one of KAN so you have plenty of time to have your bunny completed across the weekend.

Stream 2 – Stitching on your knitting – Embroidered Tea Cosies

Wool embroidery can be done on many knitted and felt items so this workshop may inspire you to try this.

During this workshop you will embroider with wool on a pre-knitted teacosy. Using simple free-form embroidery and bright colours, you can create a unique teacosy, to keep or give as a gift.

Sized to fit a small or medium teapot (pattern will be sent to you before KAN, you must complete and bring it with you to work on).
You may choose to work on a knitted swatch which should measure at least 20 x 20cm (8×8 inches).

Skills Used in this Workshop:
• Knitting flat dense fabric
• Crochet cord or twisted cord
• Making tassles or pompoms
• Learn simple embroidery stitches: running; chain; daisy, etc – with instructions provided in the workshop

Stream 2 – Introduction to Wheel Spinning

This is a class that has been most requested at KAN – a primer on Wheel Spinning.

Delene is an experienced spinner and will cover a variety of aspects in this practical hands-on class
You will look at types of sheep breeds and the differing fleeces they produce, processing methods, spinning wheels and what all the bits are called and what they do as well as creating yarn and exploring different spinning styles.

We STRONGLY encourage you to provide your own wheel as we only have access to a handful of wheels for those unable to travel with one.

A Wheel WoF session(s) will be available to make sure you have your wheel in good working order before the session starts. A fee for materials could apply. Ashford maintenance kits will be available for sale

The art of cabling or travelling stitches is one that is both endless creative and spectacular.

Many are put off by the requirement of having to help use an additional needle to take your stitches on their journey.

Ethan will cover how and when you can do away with that cable needle and speed up your cable knitting.

Classes for KAN 2021: Homegrown

This lineup is proving to be the best yet.  Please take time to plan your workshops and I strongly suggest selecting a first, second or even third choice classes.

Classes do sell out EXTREMELY quickly.  It’s like trying to book tickets for a concert, so please don’t be disappointed if you miss out.  I have 25% more classes this year with a number of classes repeated, so you have more chances to get the classes you desire.

All classes are 3 hours long and are $79 each with some classes attracting additional material fees for items provided by the tutors.

You will need to bring your basic knit/crochet capsule of needles & notions to classes – with class requirements sent out within two weeks of the event.

KAN base registration must be purchased in order to unlock and book classes – with the exception of the Skeinz classes with Susan and Alia
